Penta Books is a conceptual project that was created with the intent to assess the need for more communal spaces. The vision was to create a space where people can disconnect from day to day stressors, foster new connections, and find comfort in their own presence.
Overall View of Communal Space
The concept pulls inspiration from European magazine stands and the ease of walking up to a stand and checking out an item. People could then sit somewhere nearby and enjoy the magazine with a coffee or take it home to enjoy at another time. Architecturally, there was a desire to design something that challenged the vernacular. Hence, the pentagon shape and the name Penta Books.
Interior & Exterior Check-Out Desk
It was thought best to situate Penta Books in an urban setting where it can be accessible to a wider audience. The items it will focus on selling are books, magazines, small book accessories, and other unique items that will be in rotation throughout the year. These unique items can include art from local artists, ceramics, or board games that can be enjoyed in the outdoor communal area.
Cafe & Game Tables
Outdoor Book Stands
The outdoor communal area needed to hold space for different activities and groups of people. One area has built-in concrete chess and tic-tac-toe tables, another has round table seating for people to have casual conversation, and another features a Lungo Mare seating arrangement. The Lungo Mare is one sold piece of concrete who's form is very dynamic as no pocket of seating is exactly the same. This allows for people to sit upright, lay down, sit alone, or sit alongside another person.
Bookshelves with a View
Skylight Design
Inside, the skylight is an architectural feature that is meant to be enjoyed from inside the bookstore; the idea was to create a geometric design that could cast a shadow well. The result is a flower design that features colors that pop against the soft green and warm wood of the interior yet simultaneously harmonizes with them. Depending on the time of day and the sun's movement, the shadow will be casted on the floor or a wall.
